Sade enters their fourth decade of existence with a sixth studio album. And what an entrance! The group’s distinct sound, precisely constructed to perforate the artifice of performance and directly convey the wages of the heart, seems to have an unusual resistance to mortality, existing beyond popular music trends; it is as if Sade have stepped outside of the aging process. Their sound is singular, their familiar style so strong that any one track feels as if it could have been recorded during any period of the group’s history, a meaningful timelessness that allows minor renovations to feel like revelations. Wily FOX execs have watched with glee as inept NBC suits have alienated late night host . Six years ago, FOX tried to pry O’Brien away from NBC by reportedly offering to triple his salary if he’d switch networks, but he stayed because execs promised he’d soon inherit The Tonight Show, late night’s most illustrious gig, from Jay Leno. Now, less than a year since the poofy-haired redhead took over, the NBC peacock is showing its true colors, trying to push The Tonight Show back to 12:05 a.m. (a.k.a. tomorrow motherfuckin’ morning) so Leno, who failed miserably in prime time, can slide back into the 11:35 p.m. slot. FOX is nipping at O’Brien again, and there’s a chance the network may land the star simply because he wants to be treated like one. [Read More]

Sugar-powered phone concept robs us of perfectly good Coke

By Chris Ziegler posted Jan 12th 2010 12:52AM
This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a sugar fuel cell, but gosh darnit, it just might be the sexiest. Chinese designer Daizi Zheng has conjured up a vision for a soft drink-powered cylindrical Nokia of the future that pounds Coca-Colas to stay juiced: just screw off the top, pop the can, and pour. Daizi estimates that that a single can of the stuff could outlast a traditional lithium ion battery by three to four times — never mind the obvious ecological benefits — but don’t you dare steal our caffeine the next time you need a charge, alright? We know you were put off by the whole
Twitter censorship debacle last month, but Microsoft and the Zune HD have moved past that (honest) and they want you to come along as well. They’re enticing everyone to forget about that bone-headed move by, well, throwing everyone a bone and adding in Xvid support, part of full compatablity with MPEG-4 part 2 Advanced Simple Profile. DivX will not be coming out to play, but Smart DJ will be, a feature that isn’t so much new but is newly portable, providing a counterpoint to the iPod’s Genius and, since you can use it to stream content from the Zune Marketplace (when connected via WiFi) it begins to approach the functionality of apps like Pandora or Slacker Radio. Tasty, indeed, though at this point we’re not sure when Microsoft will be throwing us this juicy firmware update. [Read More]

The Realities of Love at First Sight
How fast can you really size up a partner? You walk into a party and head for the bar. Suddenly someone is beside you, offering to get you a drink. You begin to talk. Almost immediately you’re struck by the eerie feeling that you may have just found Mr. Right. But that’s crazy, isn’t it? Or is it? Can a person really know something this life-changing so fast? The man who refused to talk about the past finally did. Mark McGwire confirmed on Monday what anyone who has followed baseball over the past five years already knew. He took steroids, not once or twice as so many of his peers have claimed, but on and off throughout the decade that made him famous. “Looking back,” McGwire said, “I wish I had never played in the steroid era.” [Read More]

Lady Gaga does not do off-the-rack fashion. The singer changed six times over the course of the MTV Video Music Awards and each outfit demonstrated her mastery of the mix. She added an Alex Noble lace headpiece to a chiffon-topped white dress for the after-party (left), a Jean Paul Gaultier sculpted one-piece (along with Viktor & Rolf boots) backstage (right) and wore a sheer Alexander McQueen number with a Haus of Gaga crown to pick up one of her three awards (center). Do you think she is a trendsetter? [Read More]

Obama: Health care progress a victory for American people December 21, 2009 6:15 p.m. EST Washington (CNN) — Health care reform moved a major step closer to reality Monday when the Senate voted before dawn to overcome a Republican filibuster against a sweeping $871 billion health care bill.
The procedural vote virtually ensures the bill’s final approval by the chamber later this week. It would then be merged with the $1 trillion House version in what would be tough negotiations on President Obama’s top domestic priority for 2009. A final bill requiring approval from both chambers would not be completed until after Congress returns in January from its holiday break. [Read More]
